Graduate Recruitment Selection Process
During the selection process, we will be appraising and evaluating a diverse array of competencies. To apply, you need to have completed, or be completing your undergraduate or Honours studies by the end of the 2009 academic year.
Applications are now open and will close on Monday, 13 April 2009. Students studying Geology, Metallurgy, Minerals Process Engineering, Mining Engineering or Surveying are encouraged to apply promptly as Assessment Centres for those specific disciplines are planned for late March.

The selection process may require you to progress through a number of the following stages:
- Online application
- Cognitive ability tests
- Telephone interview
- Assessment Centre
- Reference checks
- Site Visit
- Pre-employment medical (if required)
- Offer
The application form will only take about 20 minutes to complete. You will need your resume and academic record on hand as you will be required to upload them.
Cognitive ability tests
Some applicants may be required to complete cognitive ability tests to assess their numerical, verbal and/or abstract critical thinking skills. You will receive an email confirming how to access the tests and your log-in details. When you access these tests you will be provided with a detailed briefing regarding the tests and provided with practice tests to complete if you wish.
Telephone interview
A telephone interview will be conducted to assist us with learning more about you. The interview will take approximately 20 minutes and incorporate motivational and behavioural-based questions Your performance during the interview will be measured against our graduate competency model.
Assessment Centre
Selected candidates will be invited to attend a half-day assessment centre, (run in most state capital cities of Australia),you will be required to participate in a group exercise as well undergo a face-to-face interview. We believe the assessment centre will provide an objective basis for the appraisal of your suitability to join BHP Billiton
As well as having the opportunity to demonstrate your level of competency in a couple of different settings, you will meet some of our people and learn more about our organisation. Therefore, prepare yourself for your attendance by being aware of our Charter, ask questions on the day and enjoy getting to know us.
Reference checks
As part of the online application process you will have provided the contact details of two referees. If you have reached this stage of the process a BHP Billiton representative will call you to confirm that it is still OK for us to approach your nominated referees.
The referee feedback will be measured against our graduate competency model.
Site Visit
This is the opportunity for you and the BHP Billiton Hiring Manager to meet face-to-face. The interview will take place at the operation and will therefore involve a visit to the site, giving you the opportunity to learn more about us, the business, the local environment and the community. BHP Billiton will pay for travel costs.
Your interview performance will be evaluated against our graduate competency model and the requirements of the specific graduate role the Hiring Manager has on offer.
Pre-employment medical
Many of our operations require you to undertake a statutory pre-employment medical assessment. This is to ensure you are physically capable of undertaking the work required in a safe manner or if, in your own interest and the safety of others, restrictions need to be placed on the work that you will be able to undertake.
The process for completing a pre-employment medical will vary depending on the operation, however when the time comes you will be provided with detailed instructions on how to go about it. In some instances the pre-employment medical assessment can take place at the operation on the day of your interview and site visit.
Offer
If you are successful through all aspects of the process, an offer of employment will be made.
