Health & Safety
Health and safety are basic values to which all Illawarra Coal people are committed. Illawarra Coal reinforces expected behaviours every day, and is committed to the systematic management of risk to achieve zero harm. Safety program initiatives include:
- Recruiting people with a high safety commitment.
- An employee induction process that includes Management Presentations to show "The Way We Work Around Here".
- Daily reinforcement and seeking personal commitment, through shift muster room talks
- Behavioural safety observations that ensure that every team member contacts or is involved with another person on site to observe and discuss safety in the workplace - this is a key performance indicator for our people.
- Before starting work, the hazards and risks are assessed via a "task analysis" to reduce harm to people, the environment and equipment.
- An annual Performance Improvement Plan that identifies opportunity and measures improvement.
- A Management System that incorporates risk management principles (Our management plans are based on identified critical risks).
- Supporting our people through our health and fitness program (Non smoking site, health surveillance, drugs and alcohol, fatigue management).
These initiatives have been developed to create a positive attitude to safety awareness and continuously improve the safety performance at Illawarra Coal.
