Dendrobium Community Enhancement Program
A benchmark program involving Dendrobium, Wollongong City Council and community representatives, the CEP was funded by an initial investment of A$600,000 and receives regular funding of three cents per saleable tonne of coal.
The management committee has recently adopted a strategic approach to the way applications for funding are received and considered.
The focus of the CEP is to facilitate access to funding for community projects with a vision to make Mt Kembla the pre-eminent historical village in the Illawarra.
Individuals and organisations in the local community are encouraged to apply for funding.
Applications for funding under the Dendrobium CEP are assessed against a range of selection criteria, and are grouped into one of four categories – community, environment, education or culture.
Key focus areas in the current plan are activities for local youth, the development of a strategic plan for weed eradication, the development of a concept for the entry to Mt Kembla village and the development of self-guided village walks to promote the historical significance of mining in Mt Kembla.
Some of the projects which have been funded by the Dendrobium CEP include:
- Mt Kembla Bridge Improvements
- Mt Kembla Translator support
- Self-guided walking tour brochures
- Mt Kembla School Learning Support – enhancing reading and technology support
- Mt Kembla School – playground renewal
- Mt Kembla Rural Fire Service – roller door replacement
- WIRES road signage
- Mt Kembla Scout Group equipment store
- Establishment of Heritage Centre
