Elouera & Kemira
Elouera
Now owned by NRE, Elouera mine was officially opened in 1993 upon the amalgamation of the Nebo, Kemira and Wongawilli coal mining leases.
Situated on the Illawarra escarpment about 14km from the Port Kembla Coal Terminal, Elouera was operated by Illawarra Coal until June 2005, when it closed in line with the opening of the newly established Dendrobium mine.
Committed to efficient utilisation of the State’s coal resources for the benefit of the industry and workers and following a strengthening of international coal prices, we explored a number of opportunities for an extension to the life of the mine, which culminated in the signing of an agreement with Delta Mining with allowed it to take operational control of Elouera for 15 months from September 2005.
Delta extracted about a million tonnes of coal from remnant coal reserves at Elouera, (renamed Delta for the duration of the lease) before the agreement with Illawarra Coal ended in November 2006.
After almost a year of carefully considering the mine’s future, Illawarra Coal agreed to sell the mine to NRE in late 2007. It remains part of our Company history.
Kemira

Kemira replanted vegetation with Wollongong in the distance.
The Kemira Mine site is situated on Mt Keira - part of the Illawarra escarpment, 80 kilometres south of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.
The mine, which commenced in 1848, has a rich history, and at the time of its closure in 1991 was the longest operating mine in NSW.
Rehabilitation of this site was completed in 2005, and the lease will soon be relinquished. A purpose for the site is yet to be determined, but could include sale of the property.
