Refinery, Power, Port

The expansion will increase the design capacity of the Worsley refinery from 3.5 to 4.6 million tonnes of alumina a year. The project will not only involve additional facilities at the refinery but also the installation of more modern, efficient technology and equipment.
Major work to be undertaken at the refinery includes the installation of an additional 20 precipitation tanks; a sixth, more efficient calciner; a fifth deep cone washer; a more efficient and cleaner conveyor system to the train loading facility; and an additional rail loading silo.
Rail transport will increase to cope with additional alumina production and increased inputs such as coal, caustic and lime. Worsley’s facilities at the Bunbury Port will be upgraded to cater for bigger and more frequent trains.
A new A$500 million multi-fuel cogeneration power plant is being built at the refinery as part of the expansion. The steam it will produce is vital to the refining process. There will be the capacity to export power additional to onsite requirements.
The cogeneration plant will be owned by Griffin Energy and operated and maintained by Worsley Alumina. The highly-efficient plant will be able to burn coal, biomass, fuel oil and gas.
