Expansion Project

Worsley Expansion Project - Presentation

Efficiency and Growth Expansion Project

The Efficiency and Growth Expansion Project will increase Worsley’s annual alumina production capacity from 3.5 to 4.6 million tonnes making its refinery near Collie one of the biggest and most efficient operations of its kind in the world.

The expansion, which was announced in May 2008, consists of a A$2.5 billion construction project to upgrade the capacity of the refinery, expand Worsley’s mining operations near Boddington and upgrade its port facilities at Bunbury. Another A$500 million will be spent on a new multi-fuel cogeneration power plant to be built at the refinery.

The refinery, mine and port construction work will be overseen by Bechtel, the Engineering, Procurement and Construction Manager. The cogeneration plant will be built and owned by the Griffin Energy. It will be operated by Worsley, which will use the steam and power it will produce in the refining process.

Up to 4000 construction jobs are expected to be created over the life of the project.
